Indigenous access

Through efforts led by Friends of Acadia and the National Park Service (NPS), the Wabanaki people have been regaining access to traditional sweetgrass harvesting. New agreements, implemented under NPS regulations from 2016, now allow culturally affiliated tribes to gather plants like sweetgrass within park boundaries. These initiatives are part of an ongoing effort to reconnect Indigenous communities with their traditional practices in Acadia. However, such activities still require permits and agreements, and full sovereignty remains limited. Allies continue to work.
